Joy is the founder of award-winning brand Natural Nubian Dolls.
Her story and commitment towards equality and empowerment stems from her Zimbabwean background. Born and raised in an affluent area where her family was the minority amidst the wealthy whites, Joy's parents were instrumental as activists against colonial oppression in Zimbabwe. When she moved to the UK, aged 19, Joy remained defiant in her spirit and refused to succumb to pressures to become more 'English'. However, despite her African pride, Joy silently suffered colourism and for years wanted to be lighter, like her mum and sister.
As a parent Joy always wanted her child to grow up happy, healthy and confident in her own skin but was appalled by how tiny the selection was when it came to darker skin dolls.
Joy realised a gap in the market and social need for greater representation which inspired Joy the idea to create Natural Nubian dolls.
"The dolls are important for children because they will help them develop a healthy self-image and when a child has a doll that looks like her then they know that there's people that look like them in the world."
