Seyi Shay Seyi Shay
Seyi Shay has in the past seven years become a household name and one of the unignorable female voices hoisting the Nigerian flag around the world.

05/04/2019 9PM | GUEST | Flo

Seyi Shay was groomed for stardom at an early age. Born Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua on December 21st, 1985 in London to Nigerian parents, she started singing at the age of six, and by high school, things took a professional turn when she joined the school choir and performed with the London Community Gospel Choir during a world tour that included 13 cities in Japan.

Her career soon took a leap when she signed her first record deal with Sir George Martin; the producer of the legendary band, The Beatles, in London. It was around this time she also wrote and produced three major songs for the Konami Game Soundtrack; “Crime Life”, as well as the song “You will see” which was performed by former Spice Girl; Mel C, and was also included in her highly successful Album, “Beautiful Intentions”. She was only eighteen years old at the time.

Upon her return to Nigeria, Seyi Shay released two singles, but her career took an upswing in 2012 after she released ‘Irawo’ a motivational record that puts her versatility on display, intertwining elements of her western and Nigerian roots.

In the following year, she released three singles; ‘Killin Me Softly’ ft Timaya, ‘Chairman’ and ‘Ragga Ragga’ whose video peaked No. 7 on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 Chart. In April 2014, her dancehall-influenced single ‘Murda’ which accommodated vocal contributions from singer’s Patoranking and Shaydee, was released to a very wide acclaim.

A year later (2015), Seyi Shay released her debut album, ‘Seyi or Shay’ which housed a total of 15-tracks including; ‘Right Now’ and ‘Crazy’ which features Nigerian international pop star, Wizkid.

Seyi Shay has in the past seven years become a household name and one of the unignorable female voices hoisting the Nigerian flag around the world. Her musical dexterity is unmistakable and her ability to consistently dish out par records is a proof of it. In 2016, she pushed the boundary beyond familiar terrains by experimenting with a latino sound that birthed her recent smash, ‘Yolo Yolo’ and ‘BIA’, which was released in 2017.

Continuing the streak of versatility, 2018 has seen her release a 6-track extended play titled ‘Electric Package’. In the words of Nigerian music journalist, Victor Okpala, “the EP is respectable statement of wholeness. One that frees her from the hold of stereotypes. It is a delicious musical buffet”. The EP has been followed by a number of brilliant singles including; Gimmie Love featuring Runtown and Kama Roll with East African musical giant, Harmonize.
