Tara K and Harpal Singh Chatwal Tara K and Harpal Singh Chatwal
Tara is a qualified Social Worker and Harpal Singh Chatwal is head of Domestic Abuse Service in South West London.

06/03/2019 11AM | GUEST | Sonia Poleon

Tara is a qualified Social Worker, who holds an MSc in Advanced Professional Studies and has further qualifications in Practice Education, Management, Leadership and Self-Development. In her professional roles she has worked in mental health, child care, child protection, adoption, adults with learning disabilities and in the field of regulating and inspecting for care services. She has developed practice to promote equality and diversity in society.

She is a female entrepreneur  who is a Director of a successful fostering agency in London making a difference to vulnerable children. Tara's UK and international philanthropy work, is widespread into many areas such as human trafficking, honour based crime, forced marriages , mental health and domestic violence impacting both men and women.   She has supported various orphanages internationally to provide care for young children. She is a carer to her mother and a co-parent to three beautiful girls.

Tara is a survivor of horrific domestic violence abuse from her former husband, and now through her book and motivational speaking she is empowering individuals, to live a life where they are loved, appreciated and respected.   The reason she wrote this book, is that she understands that when suffering from domestic violence it is easier said than done to leave the partner. Domestic abuse can affect the mind, body and soul, and indeed it distorts the identity of self. The aim of writing this book is to encourage other victims to be empowered when making the decision to leave. Domestic violence impacts people from all backgrounds. The power of how domestic violence takes over your life can impact anyone, no matter what their cultural background, professional status or socio - economic background.

Harpal Singh Chatwal (MSc, BSc (Hons), MBACP (Accred)) is head of Domestic Abuse Service in South West London, a mental health campaigner, award winning broadcaster and accredited counsellor. He has managed Improving Access to Psychological Treatment (IAPT) GP community services.

His empathy, humanity and overriding concern for his clients’ wellbeing have roots deep within his Sikh faith. His gentle approach has helped the most vulnerable clients find their own voice and inner courage to cope in the face of what to many would feel like insurmountable problems. Harpal is a pioneer, firstly as one of the very few Asian and Sikh men who have chosen psychotherapy as their profession and in working with men who use violence as a method of control over their partners. He is a role model for both communities. His television series ‘Mental Health Matters’ has for the first time brought culture sensitive topics around mental health to a worldwide Asian audience.
