New Afrobeats musical set to shake-up theatre scene on UK Tour
The spectacular new Afrobeats musical Oliva Tweest is set to tour the UK this autumn with a pioneering show that promises to attract new audiences to the theatre.
The success of American rap-musical Hamilton has boosted demand for ground-breaking formats in traditional venues – positioning Oliva Tweest to meet the growing appetite for something different.
The new musical is a high-octane show that follows the ambitions of London hustler and club-promoter Tobi, who has no problem winning female attention, but yearns to shake off his shady reputation and move up in the world. Driven by his need to succeed, he plans the ultimate concert to attract his idol D’Banj, naming it after the musician’s global hit Oliver Twist. But when he finds out that the new landlord of the venue intends to convert the building to become a church, Tobi is forced to disguise his true intentions.
The plot follows Tobi as he navigates comedic and sometimes explosive clashes with women, family tradition, and his reawakened conscience. It explores the different attitudes between first and second-generation African immigrants and the true definition of success.
The idea for the show was conceived by presenter-producer Yinka Ayinde, (PureYinkz) six years ago. His debut version of the show sold-out at the West End’s Lyric Theatre to a notably young audience, the majority of whom had never been to the theatre before.
A subsequent run at Hackney Empire and Nigeria’s Lagos Theatre Festival attracted industry attention and development support from the Arts Council, Stage One and Sky Academy. With new songs, exhilarating choreography, dazzling costumes and a universal tale of love versus ambition, the fully-fledged Oliva Tweest is now ready to take-off on tour.
Yinka said: “It’s a dream come true for me to see the show going on tour. We have been given so much support and encouragement to get to this point. The industry is looking for this mythical ‘new audience’ but the people are out there – we just have to let them know that we have created something they will want to see.”
The show features a host of international hits, from African artists D Banj, Wiz Kid, Afro B and Tiwa Savage, as well as original songs to get audiences moving in their seats. The 9-piece on-stage live band and vocalists, promote seamless interaction between cast and musicians, giving Oliva Tweest a supreme feel-good factor.
International music star Tiwa Savage, who’s song Kele Kele Love features in the show, praised Oliva Tweest for its energy and positive presentation of African culture, describing the show as:
“Incredible. It renewed my faith in Afrobeats and encourages everyone to keep dreaming.”
The Tour takes place this October in London, Coventry and Manchester. Advanced tickets are on sale now via http://olivatweestmusical.com
