Brixton Set to Regenerate the Love Between Old and New at Love Your Local Market - Friday 26th - Wednesday 31st May 2017

Brixton residents and visitors are invited to enjoy the festivities of Love Your Local Market - a national campaign that will reignite Brixton’s market culture and encourage young and aspiring entrepreneurs to work alongside Brixton’s veteran traders. Launching on 26th May with a ‘VIP’ Breakfast, invited guests include Chuka Umunna MP & Helen Hayes MP. This year marks a joint celebration for Brixton as they mark the European launch of Love Your Local Market whilst showcasing the unique combined offers of both the indoor and outdoor markets. The week-long festival (26th - 31st May) will showcase Brixton’s commitment to preserve its cultural history of market trading, whilst also providing the opportunity to introduce a select few traders to iZettle Reader - a card and contactless payments system.

Brixton has a rich history of markets and market trading not seen elsewhere in London. As one of London’s most aspirant boroughs, Love Your Local Market allows Brixton the opportunity to exhibit its recent £1m refurbishment of the Electric Avenue market. Hosted by Brixton BID and its partners, Love Your Local Market Brixton will generate an increase in high street footfall and entice the public with its eclectic shopping experiences amidst a week of family-friendly fun including; a ‘celebrity breakfast’, live entertainment from around the world, face painting, guided heritage tours, plus discounts and giveaways across all five markets (Electric Avenue, Popes Road, Brixton Station Road, Brixton Village & Market Row).

In recent plans to boost London’s markets, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said, “I’m a proud Londoner and a proud Englishman who has grown up with traditional street markets. Markets are deeply woven into the tapestry of English culture and nowhere is that more true than here in London. They are far more than a place to do your shopping - they are places where people meet and talk.”

The Market Traders Federation supported by Tree Shepherd are offering stalls on Brixton Station Road to community based artists, craft folk, makers and designers at bargain taster rates. Young people are particularly welcome to test their entrepreneurial skills on a stall. Fees: Friday – Wednesday £15 per day, Tuesday and Wednesday: £10. Minimum 3 days booking. Book all 6 days and receive £10 off. To apply, email: lydia@treeshepherd.org.uk
